| DIABETES EXPO | ||||||
Our Diabetes Expo was another special community service experience for Umhlatuzanians. Having set up the tables and screens and fixed all the many colourful, informative posters, some in English AND some in Zulu Charles and I stepped back to look at it all. The first visitor walked past and stopped to read the posters. We asked whether he knew about Diabetes and he replied that he did, adding, "My father died last night of Diabetes." Somehow that made us realise just how important it was for people to learn about the disease and to "know their status".
The Expo was the first opportunity we had to show off our new Umhlatuzana shirts and they were splendid. Well done Wally for organising them for us. At times there were people queuing up to have their sugar levels tested and we eventually lost count of how many tests wonderful Sr. Judy did. Sr Judy deserves very special thanks for spending most of her precious Saturday voluntarily going without lunch and tea breaks and having to program new strange glucometers while people were waiting for their turn. Thank you Sr. Judy!

| Valerie Adams, who used to be the ambassadorial scholar for the Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana, came back to the club and gave us a very interesting talk about the youth and media impact. She has recently been made a Paul Harris fellow from her club in the USA. Valerie worked for a year in the Valley of A Thousand Hills near Durban and she now is in the process of producing a book as part of a literacy project from the many youngsters stories of everyday lives in KZN. | ||||||

| On a recent tour of the United States, organised by Engen, over 7000 pairs of shoes were collected in the USA, shipped to Durban where they were distributed to numerous charitable organisations throughout KZN. Here we can see shoes being given to the youngsters of child-headed households who are learning to play tennis at Prospect Tennis Club. This was all organised by President Alistair Abell, who is also a member of Prospect Tennis Club. | TRAUMA CENTRE TRAINING WEEKEND | ||||||
The Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana, together with the assistance of participating donors and grants are offering a unique training & teambuilding weekend to volunteers and management of selected Trauma Centres, who have been involved with the club. The course will consist of numerous entry level workshops, knowledge sharing and teambuilding interventions and be fully funded (Transport, Accommodation, Meals, Workshops, etc.) by the sponsors and Rotarians. Date: 20- 22 November 2009 (Friday to Sunday) Venue: Seula Zimbili, North Coast |

If you saw Table Mountain, the Pyramids, the Sydney Opera House and many other iconic landmarks lit up for world Diabetes day on November 14th, you will have some idea of the enormity of this dreadful disease and understand why we felt that we'd like to do something to bring an end to this scourge. The statistics about the consequences of allowing diabetes a free hand to ruin the lives of people world wide are nothing short of "Horrible". 
Thank you to Jocelyn from the Windermere Centre for making space available to us for free and to Rotarian Anthony Human at D.H.S. for the loan of their tables and screens AND for arranging for them to be delivered to the Centre at 5.00 a.m. on Saturday morning! 
Thanks too to Jenny Russell of Diabetes S.A., Shelley from "OnCall" for the loan of glucometers and providing lancers and strips, and Mitchell Park Pharmacy for providing additional lancers and strips when we had run out.
